A pioneer in the American craft chocolate movement, Shawn Askinosie left a successful career as a criminal defense attorney in 2005 to make chocolate from the bean. Shawn sources 100% of his cacao directly from cacao farmers in Tanzania, Ecuador and the Philippines, sharing profits and chocolate with the farmers in a program called "A Stake in the Outcome". In addition to sharing 10% of profits with the farmers whose cacao he purchases, Shawn involves local high school students from Springfield, MO in his purchasing decisions. When evaluating new origins Shawn involved the Springfield students in choosing his next origin, and they chose a village in Tanzania. The students raised money and flew to Tanzania, where they helped build a water well for villagers and came home with cacao for Askinosie's next bar of chocolate. Askinosie has a holistic mission to serve their farmers, their neighborhood, their customers and each other.
